Mumbai is experiencing an unprecedented February heat wave, with temperatures soaring to 36.7°C, more than 5°C above normal. The India Meteorological Department attributes this unusual warmth to an anticyclone system over the Arabian Sea, which is bringing in hot north-westerly winds during afternoons. The absence of western disturbances has blocked cooler northerly winds typically seen in winter. Forecasts predict temperatures could reach 38°C by the weekend, potentially making it the city's hottest February since 2020. The heat is expected to persist until at least February 18, with only slight relief anticipated thereafter. This comes after Mumbai recorded its hottest January on record, signaling a concerning trend in the city's climate patterns14.
